AmeriCorps prohibited from aiding religious schools

Washington - More in line with the judicial action towards Christianity, U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler ordered the Corporation for National and Community Service to stop funding programs that place volunteers in Catholic schools.

The federal agency, which oversees AmeriCorps, argued that its funding was awarded based solely on the secular activities of a program - and not its religious teaching.

Kessler would have none of it, ruling that the programs were not monitored by the government sufficiently to ensure that the activities were secular.
